We recently partnered with a wonderful community organization, called Fox Valley Food for Health, for A Power of Greens: Healthy Cooking seminar. Fox Valley Food for Health is a local organization aimed at providing healthy meals to members of our community faced with serious illness while teaching teens to grow organic produce and prepare healthy meals. The meals are primarily based on organic and nutrient-rich foods, such as leafy greens, vegetables and fruits, supplemented by organic poultry and wild caught, sustainable seafood.
For the seminar, the dietitians provided guidelines for plant-based eating and discussed how a diet full of vibrant colors contain disease-fighting phytonutrients. Most people do not get enough phytonutrients and this deficiency can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, and more.
A few of the key takeaways include:
- Eat slowly and stop eating you are 80% full
- Choose mostly whole foods with minimal processing
- Choose local or organic foods when possible
- Follow hunger cues. Eat more or less based on your apetitie
- Use smaller or larger plates based on your own body size
Summer BBQ season is here and we can choose healthy, plant-based dishes to share with our family and friends. Here are two great recipes from Fox Valley Food for Health to take with to your next party!
- Powerhouse Salad
- Spinach and Strawberry Salad
